Code of Ethics
For Personnel in Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapy
The honor and credibility of a professional lies in their adherence to an exemplary code of ethics set forth as a guide to the members. The purpose of this code is far-reaching because exemplary professional conduct not only upholds honor and dignity, but also enlarges our sphere of usefulness, exults our social standards, and promotes the science we cultivate.
Pet Partners’ Code of Ethics is intended to be used as a guide for promoting and maintaining the highest standards of ethical behavior. The code applies to all Animal-Assisted Therapy/Animal-Assisted Activities personnel, whether volunteer or professional. Acceptance of membership in Pet Partners implies adherence to these principles.
- Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapy personnel will perform duties commensurate with their position and training.
- Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapy personnel will abide by the professional ethics of their respective professions and organizations.
- Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapy personnel will demonstrate a belief and attitude of reverence for all life.
- Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapy personnel will, at all times, treat all, the animals, the people, and the environment, with respect, dignity, and sensitivity, maintaining the quality of life and experience of all involved.
- Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapy personnel will be informed and educated on the aspects and issues related to Animal-Assisted Activities and Therapy.
- Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapy personnel will demonstrate commitment, responsibility, and honesty in all phases of their activities.
- Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapy personnel will be responsible for complying with local, state, and federal laws and Pet Partner policies governing Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapy.
- Each individual and organization will establish or adopt written guidelines to assure a quality program. Â All programs need to be continuously evaluated and, when appropriate, improved to assure quality standards and service.
